Storing Research Peptides: Temperature and Handling
Why lyophilised peptides are stored cold, how long they last, and how to protect them from degradation.
Storage conditions are one of the biggest factors in how long a peptide reference material stays usable. Heat, moisture, light, and repeated temperature swings all accelerate degradation.
Dry powder
Lyophilised peptides are typically stored at minus 20 degrees Celsius, protected from light and moisture. Kept sealed and cold, many are stable for a year or more. Keep the desiccant in the vial and avoid opening it until needed.
Reconstituted material
Once dissolved, stability drops. Short-term storage is often at refrigerator temperature, with longer-term aliquots frozen. Minimise freeze-thaw cycles, since each one can reduce potency.
Handling
Bring cold vials to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation drawing moisture into the powder. Use clean technique and standard laboratory PPE throughout.
